Target Groups for the BLS Course

The Basic Life Support (BLS) course is not limited to specific groups, but primarily targets healthcare professionals and emergency responders. Below are the main categories:

  • Doctors who directly deal with emergency cases.
  • Nursing staff in emergency rooms and other departments, to fill the gap during the absence of emergency doctors.
  • Firefighters, as fires produce suffocating gases that may cause asphyxiation among victims or bystanders.
  • The general public, to ensure that the largest number of lives can be saved in emergencies that may occur in streets, transportation, or public places before ambulances arrive.

Basic CPR Steps Learned by Trainees

You will learn the steps of Basic Life Support (BLS) in our practical training course. These steps differ slightly for adults, children, and between males and females, but here are the general theoretical steps:

  • First, ensure the safety of the surrounding area and check if it’s suitable, as there may be hazardous gases causing suffocation.
  • Check the victim’s responsiveness — can they breathe or not? Is there bleeding?
  • Call emergency services if the person is not breathing or only gasping, or ask someone else to call while you start the basic steps.
  • Kneel beside the person and place them on a firm, flat surface.
  • Open the airway and close the nose with your fingers.
  • Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest at the sternum, interlock your other hand’s fingers, keeping your shoulders directly above your hands and arms straight.
  • Start compressions using your body weight, not your arm strength, pressing at least 5 cm deep at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.
  • Perform 30 compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths, each lasting about one second, then repeat the cycle to achieve at least 100 compressions per minute.
  • Allow the chest to fully rise after each rescue breath, and continue until the victim shows any sign of life.

When Can You Stop CPR?

Continue performing CPR until you notice any signs of life from the victim, or in the following cases:

  • The AED device is ready to use.
  • A healthcare professional or emergency responder takes over.
  • You become too exhausted to continue.
